About GoGabber

Helping international professionals feel more at ease using English in Scotland.

I help you understand local communication, practise real-life conversations, and feel better prepared at work and in everyday life.

17 years in international business, including roles in Scotland's whisky industry.

My story

Before becoming an English teacher, I spent 17 years in international business, working with people from all over the world. For much of that time I worked in Scotland's whisky industry at Pernod Ricard, Edrington and International Beverage.

I loved the work and the people, but I saw first-hand that communication is about more than the words we use.

It's about understanding humour, context, unspoken expectations and the small things that shape everyday conversations.

That experience led me to train as an English teacher (CELTA) and create GoGabber.

Why GoGabber exists

Scotland has its own rhythm of communication. People use local phrases, humour, fast speech, indirect comments and small talk in ways that don't always appear in standard English courses.

If you already speak English well but still feel unsure in Scottish conversations, that doesn't mean your English is bad. It often means you haven't had the chance to learn these real-life skills.

GoGabber comes from "to gab" — to talk freely and naturally. That's the goal: not perfect English, just real communication in real Scottish contexts.

"I've noticed positive changes in both my confidence and the way I communicate. I feel more comfortable expressing my ideas at work and in everyday situations. It has also helped me understand different speaking styles, which is incredibly useful in both professional and social settings."

Alvaro Vazquez Tejado, Glasgow

What I believe

Real situations over textbook exercises

We work with the conversations you actually face at work, socially and in everyday life.

Communication over perfection

You don't need flawless English to connect with people and share your ideas.

Practice that carries into real life

You'll try things in a safe space, then use them out in the real world with support.

Let's get you using English with more confidence.

Before you book

A few things people ask

Is it really free?

Yes. The evening is free to attend. Places are limited, so reserving ahead secures your spot.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely. Most people come solo. That's exactly the point of the evening.

What if I don't drink whisky, or don't drink at all?

Completely fine. The tasting is optional, and non-alcoholic options are available. Come for the conversation and culture.

Do I need to know anything about whisky first?

None at all. The tasting is guided from the very beginning, and half the fun is not knowing yet.

Will my English be good enough?

Yes. This is a relaxed, low pressure evening, not a class. Everyone here is figuring out real life Scottish conversation together.
