If you know the words but find them difficult to recognise in natural conversation, this workshop will help you understand why and show you how to practise listening more effectively.
- You use English at work and in everyday life, but natural spoken English in Scotland can still be difficult to follow.
- You recognise words when you read them, but do not always recognise the same words when people speak naturally.
- Different voices, accents, rhythm and connected speech can make familiar English sound different.
- You sometimes miss part of a conversation because you are still trying to understand what was said before.
- You want a clear and practical way to improve your listening using the English you hear around you in Scotland.
During the session, you will learn how to recognise more familiar words in connected speech, follow the main meaning and use a simple structure to practise listening more effectively.
A simple structure you can keep using after the workshop
We will work through a simple four stage process together using real spoken English from Scotland. You can then use the same structure with the audio and transcripts you receive after the workshop, as well as with podcasts, videos and English you hear in daily life.
Start with the meaning
Listen to the conversation first and focus on the overall message rather than trying to understand every word.
Find what made it difficult
Look at the parts that were difficult to hear and notice how the words and sounds changed in natural speech.
Listen again with more understanding
Return to the same recording and notice how much more becomes clear once you know what to listen for.
Use the structure yourself
Learn how to repeat the process independently with the workshop audio, transcripts, podcasts, videos and other English you hear while living in Scotland.
