Live online workshop

Tune In to Scotland

Learn how to practise listening to real English from Scotland and start hearing more of the conversations around you.

You already speak English. The challenge often comes when people speak naturally. Familiar words can sound different, sounds join together and conversations move quickly.

This practical workshop will help you understand what is happening in real spoken English and give you a simple structure you can use to practise listening more effectively after the session.

Is this workshop for you?

You know the English. Sometimes you just cannot hear it.

Living in Scotland gives you plenty of opportunities to hear English, yet real conversations can still feel very different from the English you know.

  • You already use English at work and in everyday life.
  • You recognise words when you read them, but do not always hear them when someone speaks naturally.
  • Different Scottish voices, rhythm and connected speech can make familiar English difficult to recognise.
  • You sometimes lose the thread of a conversation while trying to work out what someone just said.
  • You already listen to podcasts, videos or people around you, but want a clearer way to turn that exposure into useful practice.
What you will learn

Understand why real English in Scotland can sound so different

Natural speech does not sound like English on the page. Words join together, some sounds become weaker and speakers give more emphasis to certain parts of a sentence.

You will explore stress, rhythm and connected speech using a short piece of natural English from Scotland.

Instead of trying to catch every word, you will practise identifying the parts of the message that help you follow what someone is saying.

Your listening structure

A simple way to practise that you can keep using

We will work through the process together using real spoken English from Scotland.

Listen

Start with the meaning

Hear the conversation first and focus on the overall message rather than trying to understand every word.

Notice

Find what made it difficult

Look at the parts that were difficult to hear and identify what happened in the speech.

Listen again

Hear what changes

Return to the same recording and notice how much more becomes clear once you know what to listen for.

Practise

Use the structure yourself

Learn how to repeat the process with podcasts, videos and other English you hear while living in Scotland.

Why Scotland?

Work with the English you actually hear around you

Scotland has a huge variety of voices, accents and ways of speaking. The English you hear from a colleague in Glasgow may sound very different from the English you hear on a course or in a textbook.

The workshop uses natural speech from Scotland so your listening practice connects directly to your life here.

This is not about learning one Scottish accent or copying the way someone else speaks. The aim is to become more adaptable when English sounds different from what you expected.

What changes afterwards?

Feel less thrown when you do not catch every word

The aim is not to understand every word in every conversation.

The aim is to hear more of the meaning, stay with the conversation and know what to listen for when someone speaks quickly or sounds unfamiliar.

Imagine sitting at lunch with colleagues, joining a conversation at an event or listening in a meeting and realising:

I did not catch everything, but I followed that.
